Final Reflection/Theory of Writing

I believe that writing is the framework for communication as well as a medium that allows an individual to express themselves as a person. One’s writing theory is heavily influenced by their own personal history and understanding of their purpose in life. My personal writing theory roots from my upbringing in an immigrant family as well as my sexuality. Life as a closeted, first generation child in a low-income immigrant family teaches one to be rather cynical of others. I grew up believing that everyone in life was selfish and deceitful. I believed that it was a cut-throat world out there and in order to make something of myself, I had to harden my will and learn to be distrustful of others. Although my personal view of the world and it’s inhabitants has now changed over the years, the cynical part of my mental being will always be a part of me. All of this is apparent in my writing style. I am very judgmental in my writing. In my first project for class, I wrote a rhetorical analysis on the “This is America” music video by Donald Glover. In my analysis, I was rather harsh for my critique of America and it’s fetishization of a society that deliberately chooses not to assist those in need. In a way, this country’s society has also had a rather deep impact on my writing style. The disgusting ways our society functions has immensely frustrated me and has caused me to lose my trust in humanity. My cynical approach to most writing assignments is a product of my own history and the overall that we live in.

I don’t believe that my writing theory has drastically changed throughout this class. Although I was exposed to some rather interesting forms of narrative such as the odd games we played for Week 9, none of them really changed my view on anything or altered my way of writing. If anything, this class has caused me to become more cynical of the multi media platforms that plague my everyday life. The things we learned about rhetorics and the marketing strategies behind them have illuminated my approach to certain media. I have become more observant and analytical when viewing advertisements, TV shows and movies. It has even allowed me to appreciate comedy more. For example, when watching a stand-up routine on Youtube, I start to notice the subtle ways that the comedian has forged his work in order to make him or herself more relatable to the audience. These minor details allow them to set up bigger punch lines later on during their set and overall allow the audience to more easily charmed through the use of ethos, logos, pathos, and kairos. In the future I will aim to integrate these techniques more often in my writing in order to achieve the maximum impact of my writing theory.

Overall I don’t really use that much technology when writing. To me, writing doesn’t require extra fluff and quirks. Good writing should be able to achieve it’s goal without the use of modern technology. There’s a reason why we still read centuries old pieces of writing.
